Feeling Stressed About A/L? What Actually Helps

A/L stress is normal, but it does not have to take over. Practical steps to get unstuck, make a realistic plan and look after yourself before the exam.

Almost every A/L student reaches a point where it all feels like too much — especially with Combined Maths. If that is you right now, you are not alone, and it does not mean you will fail.

Why it feels overwhelming

Stress usually comes from uncertainty: not knowing where you stand, or where to start. A long list of "everything I haven't done" feels impossible. A short list of "the next three things" does not.

Make the problem smaller

  1. Write down every topic you feel unsure about.
  2. Circle the two that appear most often in past papers.
  3. Plan just this week around those two.

Small, finished tasks rebuild confidence far faster than big plans you abandon.

Protect your sleep

An extra late-night hour of study is rarely worth it. Tired brains make careless mistakes — the exact mistakes that cost marks in Combined Maths.

Study in focused blocks

Try 40 minutes of focused work, then a 10 minute break away from your phone. Three good blocks beat a whole distracted day.

Talk to someone

A teacher, a parent, a friend — saying it out loud helps. If stress becomes overwhelming, the National Mental Health Helpline (1926) is free and open 24 hours.

Get a clear plan

If you don't know where to start, that is exactly what a Math Power Slot in the MathCLINIC is for: MathDOC finds where you stand and gives you one task at a time. See also our study help page.
