Stressed about A/L? You are not the only one

Almost every A/L student hits a point where Combined Maths feels like too much. Stress usually comes from not knowing where to start. Here is what helps.

1. Find out exactly what is wrong

“I'm bad at maths” is not something you can fix. “I lose marks on projectile questions and run out of time in Part B” is. Go through your last paper and write down where every lost mark went.

2. Make the plan small

A plan to “finish applied maths this month” is easy to abandon. A plan of one task per day — ten questions on one topic — is easy to keep. Small wins rebuild confidence fast.

3. Practise the way the exam works

  • Do past paper questions under time limits
  • Mark them honestly with the marking scheme
  • Redo the questions you got wrong a few days later

4. Look after yourself

  • Sleep matters more than one extra late-night hour
  • Take short breaks; work in focused blocks
  • Talk to someone — a teacher, a parent, a friend — when it feels heavy
  • If stress becomes overwhelming, call the National Mental Health Helpline on 1926 (free, 24 hours)

5. Get a second pair of eyes

Sometimes the fastest way out is someone who has seen thousands of A/L students. That is what a Math Power Slot in the MathCLINIC is for.

Questions students ask

What is a Math Power Slot?

A one-to-one session with MathDOC. He finds exactly where you are losing marks, then sets a personal plan of tasks for you to work through before the next slot.

I'm behind in Combined Maths and stressed about A/L. Can MathDOC help?

Yes — that is what the MathCLINIC is for. Instead of covering everything again, MathDOC diagnoses the topics costing you marks and gives you small, clear tasks so you can see progress week by week. Many students start after a poor term test.
